Statement
Jared Gruendl plays with communication, and the act of looking through photography, video, or within a digital realm like Instagram or Snapchat. The work, in tandem with their gender, is constantly in motion, moving and communicating with lights buzzing like a discotheque from within the walls; perspective is shifted. In their performances, Gruendl distances themselves from the viewer, whether through a field of grass or a phone screen; there is agency in distance. When it all gets to be too much, they listen to Cher sing: I can feel something inside me say/I really don’t think you’re strong enough.
